Springbok Squad Selection

Jake White’s reasoning for his squad, at least his loose trio – So through some reading I finally found something about the Springbok squad that actually makes a bit of sense. Through Jake’s entire explanation I found good reason, except for one glaring mistake (In my humble opinion) – His argument on Butch James. Having watched the Sharks play at times superb, at other times nothing short of inspiring rugby, I find it hard to believe that a central figure in their team such as Butch was left out. And Jake’s reasoning here is the amount of time spent on the sidelines by Butch due to injury. I could not disagree more on this point, Butch definitely played a key role in the Sharks unprecedented success in the Super 14 this past season (the first South African team to ever finish top of the Super 14 log) yet he’s played too little rugby according to coach Jake White.

The interview boiled down to combinations, combinations, combinations. Jake’s viewpoint is that he selects his entire squad based on what he needs for his team to work in combinations, not on individual ability. And these selections change as one player is injured, off form or lacking game time.

“Combinations and role specifics within those combinations are influential in my decision-making. We can always debate the merits of one player over the other, but in the context of combinations there has always been a method to my thinking that has been consistent over four years. I have always asked myself how the three players will combine as a trio. They have to complement each other; not cancel each other out. Furthermore, their value has to go beyond the primary function of a six, seven or eight. Who I choose at lock determines the make-up of my loose-trio and vice-versa.”

Sound thinking, perhaps – But, as they say, the proof’s in the taste of the champagne flowing out of the World Cup, so let’s see…

Top 10 Common SEO Mistakes

Webmasters spend a lot of time and efforts on optimizing a website. They try different strategies to get higher search engine rankings for their website, but some of them fail to get desired results just because of some mistakes. In this article I have listed some common mistakes which should be avoided while optimizing a website as they may have adverse effect on your Search engine rankings:

1. Keyword Stuffing: Putting the same keyword again and again or using hundred different spellings or tenses of the same keywords in your keyword meta tag is known as keyword stuffing and considered as spam by search engines. You must avoid it as it may harm your search engine rankings.

2. Duplicate Content: Make sure to have some unique and informative content for users on all web pages, it must be related to your business. Having the same content on your different pages of website must be avoided as it may have an adverse effect on your search engine rankings.

3. ALT Tags: Do not forget to add ALT tag while using images in your website. You can use your targeted keywords also in ALT tags. It makes your website accessible for search engine spiders.

4. Framesets: Avoid using framesets as frames-based pages behave differently from standard Web pages, affecting essential Web functions like printing and navigation. search engines cannot index framesets.

5. Navigation and internal linking: Proper navigation and internal linking is also matters a lot. Navigation menu should be easily accessible by users. Make sure that the anchor text linking to pages within your own website is relevant to the target page.

6. Anchor Text of Inbound links: Having a lot of inbound links is not enough but the anchor text pointing to these links is also very important. The anchor text should be targeted to your main keywords and the web page they point to should have those keywords.

7. Redirects: Redirect is used to re-route users from one URL to another and search engines consider it as you are trying to trick them. You must avoid it, if necessary then use only ’301 redirect’ which is the safest method to redirect.

8. Cloaking: Cloaking is a technique used by some webmasters to display different pages to the search engine spiders than the ones normal visitors see. You should always avoid any form of cloaking as it strongly forbidden by most major search engines now.

9. Over Optimisation: Over optimization shows that your site has been designed for search engines and not for users. It may drop your search engine rankings as search engines are now able to detect over optimized sites so you must avoid over optimization.

10. Impatience: Search engine optimization requires a lot of patience. You must wait for few months for results after optimizing your website. Have a little patience and you will get your desired results if you properly optimized your website using ethical SEO techniques.

How To Keep Your Website Fresh With RSS

One of the biggest reasons people visit websites is to get information. If you can regularly provide fresh, quality content on your website you can expect to be rewarded by visitors and return visitors. What’s more, you will be rewarded by the search engines. I recommended that you add new and original content to your site as often as possible, ideally once a day.

Regularly adding fresh and original content:

- Keeps your site visitors coming back

- Continually adds value to your website

- Makes people more comfortable buying from your site

- Establishes yourself as an authority in your industry

- Greatly helps your site rank higher in search engines

All of the above factors translate into revenue.

We all know how hard adding original and fresh content is, especially if you’re the business owner. You have to be original, creative, organized, thoughtful and motivated, and above all, able to write. So what’s a website owner or business owner supposed to do? RSS may be the answer.

What Is RSS?

Here’s the Wikipedia definition of RSS:
RSS is a family of web feed formats specified in XML (a generic specification for data formats) and used for Web syndication. RSS delivers its information as an XML file called an “RSS feed”, “webfeed”, “RSS stream”, or “RSS channel”. These RSS feeds provide a way for users to passively receive newly released content (such as text, web pages, sound files, or other media); this might be the full content itself or just a link to it, possibly with a summary or other metadata (data describing the content).

RSS feeds are operated by many news web sites, weblogs, schools, and podcasters.

“RSS” can stand for any of the following phrases:

Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)

Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91, RSS 1.0)

RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)

Want to see an example of RSS in action? Go to the Oak Web Works, LLC homepage (www.oakwebworks.com/), and look at the bottom of the right-hand column under the title ‘Latest Tech News’. This is actually two RSS feeds from other websites.

Our company homepage was very static. It didn’t change very much since the services we offer stay basically the same. Why should any visitors come back if every time they come to our site, the content is exactly the same? They don’t have much of a reason.

Interestingly, that’s the way search engine spiders were programmed to “think” as well. Spiders are programs written for search engines to regularly surf the Web and record what’s there. That recording goes into the search engine’s databases ready to be accessed by the next searcher. This process is called indexing.

For example, Google will send out a spider to your site and index a lot of it, but not always all of it. It determines how often to revisit and index your site by how often you update it. If you update it every day, then it will visit much more often than if you rarely update it. Engines also consider the homepage to be the most important page, so it’s good to update it even more often than the rest of your site.

Again, if you struggle with adding fresh content, then RSS may be the answer. We didn’t write the headlines under ‘Latest Tech News’ on our homepage. Instead, the RSS feed automatically grabbed it from another site that had created them. Once we set the feed up, we don’t have to do anything more, and our homepage has regularly updated content. Every time those headlines change, it updates its feed, which is then updated on any other websites displaying that feed, as well as ours.

RSS feeds can be more than news headlines. They can be lists of any kind. They can be press releases, articles, blog entries, product releases, or almost any other grouping of changing or growing data.

How Do I Set An RSS Feed Up?

There are a number of ways in which you can display an RSS feed on your website. You can use JavaScript or various other scripting languages. Unfortunately, RSS that uses JavaScript is not seen at all by search engines when they come and index your site, so don’t use JavaScript.

Instead, use a script that can be handled by your Web server besides JavaScript. Ask your hosting company or IT people what platform your Web server uses and what software or modules are loaded onto the machine. This will determine what scripting language you can use for your RSS.

Check if your Web server has PHP capabilities. If so, then there are hundreds of scripts written in PHP that you can use for free that properly displays RSS feeds that are recognized by search engines. There are RSS scripts written in ASP.NET, Perl and numerous other languages, so you have a wide variety to choose from.

For the Oak Web Works, LLC homepage we used an ASP script called RSStoHTML.

Which one would you choose? After you’ve determined which languages your Web server supports, conduct a search such as “PHP script for displaying RSS feeds in html” or ‘ASP and RSS’, for example. Try a few and see which ones run on your server. If one runs on your server properly, and you check this by simply seeing if it displays RSS feeds on your Web page, then use that one.

When you download the script, look at the code and find where to add an RSS feed URL. There should be a dummy one in there already, so just replace that one with the RSS feed you want to use. Here’s what a typical RSS feed URL looks like: http://www.nytimes.com/services/xml/rss/userland/Technology.xml
The URL’s often end in ‘.rss’ as well.

After we inserted the RSS feed URL into the script, we wanted to display the feed in HTML on our homepage. To do this we added the following bit of code into the spot on our homepage html code where we wanted it to display:

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Keep in mind that this is for a Windows Web server. The way in which you include it on a website powered by a UNIX Web server will be a little different. If you’re not sure, ask your hosting company.

Where can I find feeds that are relevant to my website’s content?

First you can try these:

- Syndic8 – http://www.syndic8.com/

- Feedster – http://www.feedster.com/

You can also do a search for your topic and RSS feeds. For example, search for “RSS feeds and pets’, or ‘football and RSS feeds’, or ‘small business news feeds’. Finally, you can go to specific websites that are related to your industry and look for a small, orange, rectangular icon that say ‘RSS’ or ‘XML’. Click on that and you’ll get a feed URL to enter into your RSS feed script.

Remember, always be sure to include feeds that are relevant to your website’s content. Once you get the hang of the concept, RSS can be a lot of fun, and it definitely keeps your website fresh and updated, just what search engines like, and more importantly, what website visitors like.

Search Engine Optimization

When people hear this term they think that this process is going to be complicated. The one challenge with search engine optimization is the time factor. You can go out – optimize your site and not see results for months.

This can be a big turn off for a lot of folks especially when it comes to making money online. People want results now and don’t have the patience to implement solid seo techniques.

Search engine optimization basically means developing your site so that the search engines can index it correctly. So the keyword you choose for your website needs to be prominent throughout your web copy.

Your keyword needs to be in the title tag and in the description tag. I also have keyword tags and also place my keywords there. Then you need to have your keyword at the top of the page, then sprinkled throughout the body and finally at the end of your page.

The objective is to make sure that the search engine robots understand what your web page is about. Remember they are not humans so they cannot actually read your page.

There are lots of folks out there who will quote different percentages when it comes to what is important and what is not relevant to search engine optimization. Let me break that down. Seo requires on page optimization and off page optimization.

The math behind what decides the relevance of your web page and where it should be listed on the search results is called an algorithm. The algorithm takes many factors into consideration when deciding where to list your web page. Some experts say that you’re on page optimization accounts for about 20% of the algorithm and 80% accounts for off page optimization.

Initially we talked about putting your keyword in the title – description and keyword tags then spread out throughout the body of your web page with a higher concentration at the beginning and at the end. This is effectively our on page optimization which they say accounts for 20% of the algorithm.

So we are left with 80% which is the big number. If we did everything right on our web page and nothing else then we would not get anywhere in any kind of a competitive field. So as result of this you need to get links back to your site with your desired keyword as the anchor text. This will enable the spiders to recognize further what you site is about and how important it is, depending on who is linking back to it.

If you want to build a web site without having to worry about seo yet get on the first page of Google select one of the links below.

Links Building For Google Ranking

There are many areas to Search Engine Optimisation, but if you want to rank well on Google then the most important aspect of any SEO campaign is Links and the process of Link building.

This is a lengthy and often frustrating process and it involves many different steps in order to be successful. The key thing to remember is to be patient, it can take over 4 weeks for you to see the benefit of any link building campaign. It can also take longer for people who you have requested links for to get back to you or even add your link, so do think that you will do some link building and be T10 on Google in a few weeks.

Reciprocal Links

The first and most debatable way to gain links is by getting what are called reciprocal links. This process involves you placing a link to website A and then them placing a link back to you. Now the debate focuses on how effective this form of links is and weather Google will penalise you for participating in this. The answer to this is that they are both good and bad, confused? Well basically its kind of like beer, if you drink in moderation its good for you but if you go crazy and indulge too much then its not.

With reciprocal linking its ok to have a few links back to your site, as long as they are from relevant sites (see later on) and also that they are more valuable than the link you give out (so they have a higher PR or are from a high quality or authority website). The main thing to remember here is that its not all about getting links its about getting more inbound links, a one way links is still far more valuable. But we all need to start somewhere so some reciprocal linking can be useful.

Relevant Links Relevant links are important to any link building campaign, these help define your site and Google places a higher value on these than non relevant links. So what is a relevant link, well it’s a link that is on the same topic as your website. So if you have a website that sells hotels, then having travel related or accommodation related links are better.

Directories There are different types of directories on the internet and the two main ones are Free and Paid. These can be great for not only building one way links but also getting good quality links to your website. The two best known directory’s are Yahoo and DMOZ, these have the highest credibility with Google and will give you a quality link back. They do both have their drawbacks though as the DMOZ is free but it can take a long time to get listed and if you have an affiliate website then you have practically no chance of a listing. Yahoo will list your website within a few days but they will charge you a massive $299 for the privilege and that’s not even a guarantee that you will be listed in the directory.

The best thing to do is look at other cheaper quality directories, there are plenty out there my top five are Bubl Greenstalk Botw Iwebtool Aviva There are some pretty good lists of directories on the net and for both free and paid ones, try seocompany.cas’s list of directories. Alternatively you could do a Google search for “free directory’s” or “paid directory’s”.

Blogs and Forums Blogs and forums can be a great for getting links also and also relevant links at that, just type into a search engine “blog” or “forum” and a keyword related to your website and you should find a good selection of relevant blogs and forums.

You can then contribute information to a forum and usually add an anchor texted link to your website as a signature. These can give you high pr backlinks depending on the quality of the forum.

Blogs usually allow you to comment or contribute to them and this again allows you to get a link back to your website. Also starting your own blog can allow you the chance to get more links and also if you blog becomes successful then these could turn into high pr links.

Finding Relevant Links The most basic and most time consuming way to find links is by searching the internet for sites which you can add your site too. There are a few ways to do this, one is to type into a search engine the words “add url” or “add website” and a keyword related to your website. So if you have a books website then type “add url book” as a search.

Another well used method is to find websites that link to your competitors, you can use programs such as IBP or SEO Elite which both cost money. Alternatively you can type link:yourcompetiror.com where you replace yourcompetitor with a website which is in Google top 10 for one of your keywords.

This method can be effective for finding which directories your competitors are using and also you can sometimes find sites which they are paying to list on. The chances are if your competitors is paying for advertising on a site then it is probably worth getting your website listed there too.

Write Articles A great way of not just getting one way links but also good contextual links as you can write an article on a topic related to your website and add a link within the content where relevant. This method also allows you to add a link back to your website in the author section which will be kept with the article. The article can then be submitted to various websites which distribute them for you. Basically they give people permission to use you article on their website providing they retain your author information, thus you can gain dozens of links from a single article. Since the sites often are on the same topic as the article meaning that you can often give relevant links back to you site.

Search Engine Optimization Do’s and Don’ts

The reason for and purpose of Search Engine Optimization is to dramatically increase visitation of potential customers to your website by achieving first page and ultimately a top three page rank in searches using keywords and keyword phrases that define your business and products.

Search Engine Optimization Methodology

There are several approaches to developing a strategy for improving a website for search engine placement. The most common is finding the top site for your keywords and “just doing it better than that site” using a follow the leader methodology. While this approach will give you some insight into the level of SEO the competition has employed it wont necessarily help you get ranked in a higher position without a deep understanding of all the criteria that drive that top position listing. A thorough review of the content below should help you get that understanding and you will see that while examining the top ranked competition may be instructive it wont reduce the hard work you need to do to be a web contender.

We have worked with several of the greatest marketing minds in the world and without exception not one would give a thought to the competition when defining a marketing strategy for the business. In fact if you are focused on the competition and not on differentiating your business and website from the crowd you will never achieve a higher ranking (your content will be seen as redundant and of low value to the search engines) and there is no guarantee that the competition is using the correct keywords for your business in the first place.

Your best plan of action for any SEO effort is to optimize, dramatically expand your content, and focus relevant content on specific keyword phrases that are based on your customers needs. It is this deep dive content with specific customer centric keyword phrase focus that search engines love and your success or failure has nothing to do with what your competition is doing. If you don’t know what keywords are relevant to your business or even if you think you do know talk to your customers. Take their language and their challenges as the basis for your keyword research. Then use a comprehensive free tool like Google keyword generator. You will have more truly relevant keywords than you know what to do with. Use them all and start generating content around them.

In search engine optimization there are a handful of things to check first. Then more advanced tactics to implement and finally a host of things to avoid. Here we have provided a comprehensive overview of all the tactics that make up an aggressive SEO strategy for you to use and learn.

#1 Linkability

Can search spiders find and see your content. Dynamic database driven content is a killer for SEO. You want to make sure your text and links are presented to browsers in a static form that can be read by search spiders. Dynamic menu navigation using javascript or DHTML can also be a problem. The way to correct this linking problem is to employ a site map. Link to the site map from a text link on your home page. Search spiders will follow the link to the site map and find all your pages from there.

#2 Page Titles

Each page of your website should focus on the keyword phrases that are search engine relevant to the page content. It is the primary keyword phrase that should be the title for the page. For instance this page is about Search Engine Optimization so the title of this page is Search Engine Optimization. Its that simple. Each page should have unique keyword focused content and the title tag should reflect that primary individual keyword phrase for that page.

#3 Keyword

Content – While search engines don’t measure keyword density as a criteria for page rank its generally agreed your relative keyword density should be about 3-5% of total page content. You can measure keyword density by dividing the number of keywords by the total word count expressed as a percentage. The more content you have the better. We recommend 500 to 1000 words of relevant content. Ever wonder why Wikipedia is #1 for many searches. Shear volume of targeted content. You may argue that this page about search engine optimization could be broken down into separate pages for better readability. Perhaps but not better for the SEO strategy we are engaged in. This volume of single focus single page content is what I’m talking about. Did I mention that this page is about search engine optimization and search engine optimization strategy? I think you get my point.

#4 Keyword

Headings – Your pages should be well segmented and defined by related keyword headings. Headings are expressed in HTML as H1 H2 H3. Search engines love content that is well defined by category and keyword focused on the section content. Note that on this page that the subject Search Engine Optimization is an H1 header while the sub chapters of the page are H2 headers.

#5 META Description Tag

This META tag is of the most importance. It will be used by most search engines as the descriptive text under your search listing. There are instances where these descriptions may be pulled from other directories such as DMOZ however this is less common as the quality of these directories erodes over time and you can actually use META tags to tell the search engines not to use DMOZ (My recommendation). So using a description META tag is very important.

Most websites fail at one or more of these most basic criteria for SEO readiness and fixing them can lead to dramatic improvements to your search engine ranking.

#6 Site Submission

There is so much garbage on the web regarding this almost useless tactic. The top search engines will find you whether or not you submit your site. The search spiders for Google are always looking for new and unique content to add to their index. Provided you have properly implemented all the basics above your pages will be spidered and indexed in a matter of weeks. If you want to be proactive then you can register for a Google AdWords account and access Google webmaster tools. This will allow you to submit an XML site map with all your pages to the index. Updating your XML site map to notify the index of changes to pages is also easy to do using these tools.

#7 Inter Linking

Inter linking is the practice of using keyword targeted phrases within the content as anchor text for links to your other pages. For instance in this discussion of search engine optimization I might describe SEO as subset of search engine marketing and use that phrase as the link to the relevant page. You should create content with one to five interlinks provided you have the pages to support that. You do not want to use several different phrases as links to one single destination page. The idea is to focus each individual page on the primary keyword phrase related to the anchor text.

#8 Back Linking

This refers to one way links to your site from other content relevant sites. Notice I did not say reciprocal links. Link exchanges can work if you are careful not to allow garbage sites into your directory. You must also have actual content on your website meaning that your site can’t be just a link farm. These link farm sites are all but dead now. Having one is of no SEO value and linking back to one is likely to damage your SEO effort. Other strategies for acquiring relevant back links range from using online PR to making forum posts and blog entries with links back to keyword relevant pages using those keyword phrases as the anchor text for the link in your posting. Back linking is believed to be one of the most critical factors considered for page rank in the latest search algorithms. If no-one is linking to you from outside your domain you will have a very difficult time getting a first page ranking.

Things to Avoid – they will get you penalized and/or banned from the major search engines.

Overuse and repetition, repetition, repetition of keywords Focus on keywords unrelated to the content Colored text that matches the background Duplicate content on different pages Use of Cloaking tactics and Fast Redirect scripts Too many reciprocal links or bad neighborhood links The use of multiple gateway pages that all link to the same content page. Some terms you may encounter are Keyword Stuffing, Google Bombing, Link Farming – all of these tactics are bad news and you should stay clear or risk having your domain banned from the major search engines.

How SEO Increases Page Rank

Publishing a new website on the internet is pretty easy, even for novices and first time users of the internet. Simply placing your website on the internet is enough if you have a blog or a public interest website. However, if you are starting a company which offers services or products, simply creating your website on the internet is nowhere near enough. If you are going to have any clients you will have to advertise your website in order to increase its visibility on search engines, which will ultimately lead to leads and buying customers. You can achieve this by employing the help of SEO and search engine optimization experts.

When you are in the process of choosing the SEO that will help you to get your website out there, you must, first of all, make sure that they have a solid background. Search engine optimization is not easy to perform, or else everyone would be able to do it. When you choose your SEO make sure you check their portfolio in order to see if they have experience that is in the least relevant to your website. The best part about search engine optimization and SEO consultants is that once you settle on the desired results and the best action plan, your SEO consultants will start work on day one, and you will be able to see the first results in as low as two weeks.

Search engine optimization is basically a way for you to rank higher in search engines, and to become more visible to your desired clients. The first aspect that any respectable SEO consultant will tend, is the internal components of your website. More specifically, your SEO consultants will modify the internal components of your website to match your content, products, or services. The next step is to perform a market analysis so that they can determine the best course of action for your campaign, and also give you an accurate quote for your campaign.

The general target of search engine optimization campaigns is to promote a website, so any SEO consultants you choose must give you at least a small guarantee that they will reach the desired results. Page rank is not something you can achieve over night. In fact, it might take even a few weeks before you see any significant improvement in your website’s page rank, through means of search engine optimization. You must always request a complete course of action from your SEO consultants so that you can know what their target is, and if it matches your expectations. Since the search engine optimization is only fundamentally similar for websites, you should know that even SEO consultants with spotless CV’s and portfolios can get it wrong sometimes, especially if your sector or niche is a difficult one, with many top competitors. In conclusion, I wish you the best of luck in finding your perfect SEO consultants and in reaching your goals for your internet business.

How to Rank in Google Organic Search

Obtaining an organic search ranking now is a lot of work and is not for the faint of heart. You used to be able to cram your site full content and stuff your title, and meta description and keyword tags, then submit your site to Google, Yahoo and MSN, sit back and watch the traffic roll in. Nowadays obtaining a ranking in the top 10 for most keywords is very competitive and not only is your onsite content still important, but what you can’t see is even more critical. What you can’t see without using special tools are the other sites that link to your site – these backlinks are paramount to getting you ranked in the top 10 at Google.

Backlinks are hypertext links from someone elses site that links back to your site. These links can be in the body of the text, they can be in the site’s footer or the left or right navigation bars. If you’ve ever looked at a blog, you will see what is called a Blogroll, these are a great example of a link back to someone’s site, many bloggers exchange blogroll links to boost their search engine results, often referred to as the SERPS.

Also, it’s not just the link that is important, it is the anchor text of what is included in your link. For example, if you sell cedar planters, you would want the link back to your site to include text related to cedar planters. This descriptive anchor text tells Google that your site is about cedar planters and next time someone searches for cedar planters, you get credit for that search.

Not all links are created equal, links that are deep in someone’s site are often less useful than a link from someone’s home page. However that’s not always the case, if I was offered a deep link from a web site with authority like the New York Times I would take that in a heartbeat.

Google Rankings – Achieving a Top 10 Position in Google – Part 1

Achieving a top ranking position in Google is every webmasters dream. Unfortunately very few ever make it high enough for it to make a big difference on their traffic volume. If you are one of the few to make it onto the Top 10 list, you have probably found out that your listing doesn’t always stay on top. So, besides all the other advice online, it is also extremely important to under stand your competition, and to properly use their key words to your advantage. This article will be part one of a two part series. Below we will look at GoogleRankings.com and how this useful tool will help you in your quest to achieve a top listing within Google. Just as an addendum, we use these tools on a daily basis to achieve top 10 listings for our web properties.

GoogleRankings.com is an incredible tool that every webmaster should consult. Now, because Google rankings fluctuate multiple times a day, the site is sometimes a couple hours delayed, however it provides a great resource in quickly finding how your competitors stack up against your website. Not only that but you can use different key words in conjunction with a website to see how they rank. Incredibly useful in determining which key words should be used in your content and advertising.

As an example, if you were to decide on using a specific keyword phrase.
