You could waste years spending your time trying to invent the next wheel. Why not become a copycat? One of the richest men in the world is Bill Gates. He attributes much of his success to copying from others.
Choose ten markets that are well represented on the Internet and choose the top player in each one. Base this on their appearance in the number one spot in organic search results for majorly searched terms in their industry. Visit their website and diagnose their strategies. Are they selling directly? Do they collect email addresses? Are their website CMS (Content Management Systems) with many pages? What type of content do they have? Record how many pages the sites have (Check out the site maps.) Now see where they are appearing on the web. Run an inbound link check on Google search. Example: links: website URL. How many inbound links do they have? Compare what they are doing against each other.
What are these top sites doing that you are not? What are they doing that you are also presently practicing or attempting to do? How are they doing these things better than you?
Now examine the top three players in your market. What are they doing? What keywords are they targeting? Perform ongoing keyword research in your market. Keyword combinations are almost endless and research is never ending. Words change and new words are associated with services and products every day.
Create a plan of success based on what you have learned. If the marketing strategies are working for others, there is a good chance they will work for you.
