While finding a market niche and rising to the top in organic search results for niche phrases is a highly recommended strategy to get traffic, are you matching the right keywords? Recently an associate told me how he had worked very hard to get to the top of several niche keyword phrases only to discover the traffic was turning out to be the wrong traffic.
The wrong traffic is non-converting traffic. While getting into desired search result positions seems free, the truth is you are giving up your most precious possession: time. Marketing a website takes time even for niche keyword phrases, choosing the right keywords and phrases and using them effectively is crucial.
Match the landing page or linked page to the keyword phrase: If you don’t have a product or offer when the visitor arrives that matches the keyword phrase they searched – you are wasting your time. If you focus on getting into the search results for the term “antique floor lamps” and the page visitors arrive on features antique lamps in general, you are wasting their time and yours. (If the idea is that you will have some Adsense or other PPC ads on the page that is more focused on the search term in the hopes of collecting some Adsense revenue, this might work for a while. You will probably not be getting repeat traffic and you are not developing a business.)
Your inbound link building should also use anchor text that matched the landing page subject. In many cases, this means you will be creating pages that focus on the keyword term, but more quality pages on your site will help your overall page ranks too.
