What SEO Marketers Should Avoid Doing

Perfecting the art of Search engine optimization (SEO) is a truly tricky process. An SEO does the job improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via the organic or algorithmic search results.

A lot of webmasters today want to get top search engine rankings in search engines such as Google or Yahoo. In order to attain this purpose, some webmasters go to great lengths as willing to spend incredible amount of efforts in doing link exchange, refine their meta tags and body content. However, most still overlook some crucial issues. In order to address some of these sensitive SEO issues, here are a few tips to briefly lay out some things that SEO markets should avoid doing.

Avoid Keyword Stuffing

This term refers to the repeated use of a word to swell or boost its frequency on a page. Search engines now have the capability to analyze a page and resolving whether the frequency is above a “normal” level in comparison to the rest of the words in the document.

Optimize Both Homepage And Inner Pages As Well

A number of webmasters squander lots of time optimizing their website, but for their homepages only. A webmaster should also need to spend time optimizing the inner pages as well, since this increases the likelihood of getting search engine traffic. In most fully optimized sites, an optimized inner page gets more search engine traffic than the homepage.

Use HTML Hyperlinks And Not Just Javascript

Some SEO experts only use Javascript to construct their navigation menus. However, many search engines do not “read” hyperlinks written in Javascript. On search engines like Yahoo and Google, what they do is only to index their homepage. To avoid this, you must use HTML hyperlinks so that search engines can follow and index them

Avoid Submitting Identical Pages Often

Most webmasters and SEO experts know that it is a no-no to submit virtually identical pages. Do not simply duplicate a web page, give the copies different file names, and submit them all. This move will be simply interpreted as an attempt to flood the search engine.

Be Careful In Selecting The Right Content Management Software (CMS)

Most firms agree that using web-based CMS to construct web sites makes things easier. Right, it is an easy to use this software, however, it does not allow users to create different Title and Meta tags for different web pages and has limited characters, and is obviously, not good for optimizing websites. Ideally, every web page must have specific Title and Meta tags.

SEO methods are classified by some into two wide categories: techniques that search engines suggest as part of good design, and those techniques that search engines do not approve of and attempt to minimize the effect of, often termed as spamdexing. Some industry analysts classify these methods, and the folks who employ them, as either white hat SEO’s, or black hat SEO’s.

A White hat tends to produce results that last a long time, while black hats foresee that their sites will eventually be banned once the search engines find out what they are doing. Black hat SEO experts try to improve rankings in ways that are rejected by the search engines, or involve deception. One black hat technique uses text that is hidden, either as text colored similar to the background, which are invisible, or positioned off screen. Search engines may reprimand sites they find using black hat methods, either by reducing their rankings or purging their listings fully from their databases.

Basic On-Page Search Engine Optimization

There are 2 different types of search engine optimization, on-page and off page. Here you’ll learn the differences between them, and basic tips to getting your website optimized for the search engines.

What Is The Difference Between On-Page And Off-Page Search Engine Optimization?

The difference is that on-page optimization involves changing elements of your actual webpages that most visitors to your site wont even notice. For example, having your keywords in specific places or writing the title a certain way. Basically it’s tweaking all elements of a page which are a factor for ranking well in the search engines.

Where as off-page optimization, is partially out of your control. You do have some control over it, but it’s largely dependant on what others think about your website, unless you take an active role in off-page optimization. Off page optimization is quite a large topic, so I’ll talk about it in a separate article.

Basic On-Page Elements You Need To Tweak:

For starters, you need to give your pages a title between the < title >< /title > tags in the head section of the page. Make it a descriptive title with at least 1 keyword. 4 words maximum is usually enough. Please don’t leave the title as “untitled”, and don’t set it to “home” or “Page 1″ or anything like that. Doing so won’t help your search engine rankings one bit.

Next you need to write a description using the description meta tag i.e. < meta name="Description" content="yourdescriptionhere" >. This should go in the head part of the html, after the tag preferably. This only need to be about 1 sentence long and contain your keywords once or twice. Any more than that and it might look a bit spammy.

Now You need to use the keyword meta tag. Just as a side note, most search engines don’t often use meta tags anymore, but it certainly wont hurt your rankings.
Here’s what the keyword meta tag looks like, < meta name="Keywords" content="your, keywords, here" >.
Include each keyword / keyphrase once. Do not repeat your keywords over and over in the keywords tag, once each is fine.

Ok now we need to change elements of the page than people will actually see. The stuff you just typed in will only be readable by search engine spiders when they crawl your pages, apart from the title of your page of course.

First you need to have a header in a “h1″ tag. It doesn’t look particularly pretty, but it’s effective. It lets the search engine spider know, that the piece of test in the “h1″ tag is important. Now you need to write a header in the “h1″ that contains your keywords. It’s pretty similar to just having the page title on the actual page. Doesn’t need to be long, just a few descriptive words about what the following page is about.

This next one is the part I’m going to have to leave in your hands. If you haven’t got any content on the page, then you need to write it. Try to include the keywords about 3 times in the top third of the page. Only put them where it will read correctly. For example don’t put them all in one sentence because it will sound silly. Try to make your content an absolute minimum of about 400-500 words.

Do you have images on your webpage? Then you need to give them “alt” tags. These are just incase a user cannot display or chooses to not display images for whatever reason. Instead, they will see whatever you place into your alt tag. Only put in your keyword as part of the alt tag if it is relevant. The alt tag should be descriptive to the image.

Make the above changes to your webpages and you should see a nice rise in your search engine ranks when they next index your site. It will definately pay off in the end.

Best of luck

Article Marketing Myth – You Can’t Repurpose Articles If You Use Them on Your Site

I heard this all the time. If the purpose of your article is to get your message out, you should syndicate them to as many sites as possible. However, if you use it for the purpose of earning some revenue from AdSense, the best way to do it is by publishing on your own site and no where else. I’m here to tell you that it’s a myth.

It is an understandable myth though. People concern about duplicate content issue and the impact that it can bring to your site. We have witnessed sites which posted our content got higher rankings than the original sites. That can hurt if you want to aim for traffic and cash in on AdSense revenue.

This may sound like a valid reason but it isn’t totally true. Perhaps if your article ranks well on the search engines, you will actually lose the traffic to your site. But the truth is, even if you don’t post the article on the article directory, there are possibilities that your site won’t be there too.

I mean, search engines tend to rank authority sites highly. Unless your site is one of them, you won’t be there whether you are posting the article to article directories or not.

If you repurpose the same content and post it both on your site and article directories, you may get the traffic from directories, rank on search engines, etc. People who come to read the article in the directory may click through to your site and bring you traffic. Other publishers may see your article, like it and post it on their sites, bringing you even more traffic.

The accumulation of these advantages helps you with your search engine rankings.

You also want to post on your own site — rewrite that if you are too concern with duplicate content issue. You may have loyal readers who are going to visit your site every so often. Or if you have blog subscribers via RSS feed, you will have another opportunity to touch them via the content.

How are the traffic from multiple sources could help you in AdSense revenue?

How to get a high ranking?

As well as having a well optimised and well designed website here are some of the current known facts that will assist your website in obtaining better rankings:-

The number of links to your website

On page factors such as your Title & Meta tags

Ethical Methods

If you are unfamiliar with optimisation, we should mention that ethical methods for website seo are essential, to ensure that any seo work will have a positive effect on your site, not a negative one.

Over the past few years the search engines have clamped down on various ‘non-ethical’ methods of optimisation, a few such examples include ‘keyword stuffing’, ‘doorway pages’ and ‘hidden text’. It is important that your optimisation company is aware and up to date with all the latest requirements regarding the design and optimisation of your site, otherwise rather than having a top ten listing for your site, you may find your site banned instead…..

Search Engine Rankings for Beginners

Search engine optimization is best left in the mystical land of the Intenet Marketing Guru right? Good Search engine rankings are tough to achieve. Understanding search engine marketing takes years of studying and only people with true insider knowledge and secret tools rank well in Google right? WRONG. Pure crap as a matter of fact.

Ranking well in the search engines is not difficult. In fact search engine optimization is relatively easy. What stops most people from ranking well in search engines is misinformation. Every week there’s yet another quick fix to ranking well in search engines and people jump from one quick fix to the next hoping for that Top 10 position in Google and never achieving it.

There are 6 key areas of search engine optimization that you need to know about. These are the basics. Getting these right will help you achieve the Google rankings that you’ve always wanted.

Domain Name – The jury is still out on the how relevant a keyword rich domain name is. What I mean by keyword rich domain name is say for example your site was going to be about money making ideas then an idea domain name could be either http://www.moneymakingideas.com or http://www.money-making-ideas.com. My own personal preference is with the hyphenated approach e.g. http://www.money-making-ideas.com simply because I believe that search engines can read it more easily. To registed your domain name I would suggest using either 000Domains.com or GoDaddy.com

Content – Useful content. Not keyword stuffed, spammy pages. Write something useful for your visitors. If you can’t write then you’ll need to learn. Turn Words Into Traffic is a great resource for learning how to write content and is a resource that I use personally. Turn Words Into Traffic gives you an A-Z on article writing – from a writers perspective. If you don’t want to learn how to write content then you could always use Create Website Content Fast to help you speed the process up.

Keywords – Keywords are the words or phrases that you expect people to search for your site/service/content with. There are two distinct factors to consider when choosing keywords for your site.

1. You need to target specific keywords. For example if you have a website about dating then you’ll probably find it quite difficult to achieve high search engine rankings initially with that single term. However if you were to refine an area of your site to target say Gay & Lesbian Dating that’s more specific. You could also regionalize your keywords or key phrases e.g. Gay & Lesbian dating in Toronto. This refining process is often referred to as niche (pronounced neech) marketing.

2. You need to choose the keywords that you want people to find your site with. Put yourself in your visitors shoes – think about what they might use to find you in the search engines. What keywords or key phrases would you type into a search engine to find your site? What keywords or key phrases would your potential visitor use to search for you? Always, always think like a typical websurfer.

If you’re interested in seeing what people are searching for on the web and how profitable that might be for you I would recommend that you check out Good Keywords. It’s free and does a wonderful job of helping you find good keywords :-)

I would also suggest that you try Wordtracker also. It’s a brilliant service for tracking down specific, popular keywords.

Keyword density – This is how often your keyword is used on the the page itself. For example if you have 100 words of text on a single page and you mention your keyword 5 times then you have 5% keyword density.

Opinions vary on this but anywhere from 1% – 7% is considered ideal. If this doesn’t make sense to you then it’s ok. The simple rule is this: less is more. Do not alter the text on your webpages to include your keyword over and over again because………well…. it looks stupid, won’t instill any confidence in your prospective customer and might also get you penalized or removed from the search engines.

Page title – Your tag is critical to your page being ranked well. Stuffing your tag with keywords in the hope of ranking well is pointless. Your tag, once constructed properly, will see you moving up the search engine rankings quickly. Bear this simple fact in mind when building your websites and it will serve you well.

Links – Having good links pointing to your site and good links within your site (an often overlooked aspect of search engine optimization) is pretty important as far as search engine ranking goes. Having other sites linking to yours proves the importance of your site to the search engines i.e. if the content on your site is so valuable that other site owners want to link to it then it must be important.

META Tags – Meta tags are dead baby. Well not quite dead but they are only used as a point of reference for search engines. It’s a shame to see websites that have their META tags still stuffed with keywords. It’s pointless. Put your primary keywords in the Meta Keyword part of your webpage but apart from that don’t lose any sleep or waste any energy on them.

There’s not enough space in this article to explain all of the above in the detail that I’d love to. Also I’m not a search engine expert so some of the explanation is best left to those that I learned from (Sean Burns and Jay Stockwell take a bow please :-)

Having learned the basics of search engine optimization and submission I have achieved Top 10 Rankings for all of my websites. It’s not hard to do this. It just takes work, a little patience and a little common sense.

Search Engine Ranking Positions (SERP)

Search engine marketing requires
elements of your web site to be optimized so your site gains popularity with the search
engines. There are two ways to do this: pay-per-click or naturally.

Pay-per-click search engine marketing requires you to bid and pay for specific search
engine rankings. This can be advantageous in that you can quickly achieve a high response
rate. This is helpful in testing ad copy and response rates. However, it isdisadvantageous because you have to pay for every single click. On the other hand, natural
search engine rankings take longer to achieve but are less costly, they can never bee 100% free,
you always have to have savings up to build your backlinks and market your site.

How do you do this? How do you know what the search engines are looking for?
Some top predictors include content in relation to keywords, meta keyword and meta
description tags, your site’s title and its link popularity. Although meta tags are not
used by most search engines anymore, it does not hurt to include them in your header. You need to know that
achieving high search engine rankings for more than a few words on any given web page is very
difficult to do. This is why some sites grow so big as different pages are created for each
keyword. Of course, the site then has to optimize these pages for the specific keyword that
they are trying to achieve search engine rankings for.

Other than that, focus on one main keyword, if you say, for example own a site about “baseball cards”,
and have subpages that includes “80′s baseball cards” and “Babe Ruth baseball cards”. It is good to target a few extra keywords for your
subpages instead of targeting just “baseball cards”. Those keywords are less competitive and will help you gain better rankings.

Optimizing a web page also requires that the writing on the web page contain between a 3%
and 5% keyword density. This is the percentage of times you insert your keyword into your
writing when compared to the other words that are used. So, if you are creating a site about
“volleyball” you will need to make sure that the term “volleyball” is included in your page’s
title, keywords and description. Then for every 100 words you write, the keyword”volleyball”
will need to be used at least three times. Also make sure you use header tags around your targeted keywords.
Take the extra step to include an image alt code to your images, these keywords are usually indexed
by search engines.

One very important thing to do when you are building a strong natural search engine
ranking is to work on increasing your link popularity (the number of web sites that link
to your site). This can be done by adding your site to directories, you can even pay someone to do this for you.
Trading links with other sites with the same or related content as yours. Update your articles and submit them to various article directories that allow you to place your link in your profile.

Determining what keyword sets to focus your SEO efforts on is of the up most importance. Poor keyword focus can make even the best SEO strategy perform disappointingly. There are several tools available on the internet that will allow you to conduct keyword set analysis and to determine what keywords will work best for your application.

Content is King

Search engines love content rich sites, because this allows them to easily categorize your web pages. Your content should focus on your designated keyword sets and be relative and informative. Introduction to Search Engine Optimization

There are millions of websites out there on the World Wide Web. They compete intensely with each other to attract a larger chunk of the target audience. The individuals who comprise the target audience would reach the site either by keying in the website address (URL) or by using search engines to locate the website and other similar sites in line with their needs.

In such a scenario, it becomes very important for the website owners/companies to find a place amongst the search engine listings, preferably somewhere at the top of the list. This is where Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) comes into the picture.

Most people think of SEO as being too complicated and hence, beyond their reach. However, it can be achieved if the Webmaster tried and tested methodologies, which in turn work in sync with how search engines function. Improving search engine rankings in competitive topic areas does require relevant knowledge, expertise and the advice of SEO experts, but most websites do not operate in such competitive areas. Many of them can achieve top rankings by applying just the basics of SEO.

This article contains a few basics of SEO which you could apply on your own before resorting to professional help from an expert.

What is Search Engine Optimisation?

SEO is a method of getting top rankings for a website’s relevant keywords in search engines. The relevant keywords are the phrases that prospective users of the site are most likely to type into a search engine while looking for the content that the website offers. Getting high ranks on these keywords is what SEO is all about.

The best way to start is by choosing an existing benchmark among websites that offer services similar to those on your website. Next, analyse these sites to figure out the most suitable phrases to help you decide on suitable key phrases for your website.

The next step is to allocate these key phrases to suitable pages within your site. Focus on one to three phrases per page. In case your website page is very large and covers wider areas of content, you should try to split pages that cover several closely related topics, or several aspects of a topic, into two or more shorter pages so that a different search term can be targeted at each individual page. Moreover, the content on the page should be in sync with the keywords and title of the page. Remember that smaller and more concise pages are better than longer ones because it is easier to target a keyword when there is less text on the page to dilute the focus. Optimally, a page should not have more than 200 words of content.

Search Engine Optimisation – Some Basics

Linking/navigation within the website

SEO tries to ensure that search engine spiders can find (crawl) all of the site’s pages. Otherwise, such pages cannot be read by the search engines and can, therefore, never be indexed. Thus, all your efforts are likely to amount to nothing if this essential aspect is not taken care of right at the beginning.

Some critical points to note…

Spiders can’t see links that are created using JavaScript, or if the links are served in the Shockwaves or Applets – as such, these links don’t exist for search engines. Don’t use such links if you want spiders to follow these links.

Make sure that all pages link to at least one other page. Links to pages that don’t link out are called “dangling links”, and there can be various reasons for such links. The Webmaster needs to work on these.

Avoid frame-based websites since search engines are unable to index such sites in the same way that the sites are created.

Off-page elements

Link text

This is one of the two most important elements for good rankings. The link text can be on pages within the site or on pages of other sites. Either way, it is important. The target page’s main search term should be included in the link text. Links carry even more weight if the text around them is concerned with the target page’s topic and keyword(s).

On-page elements

This is the other important element for good rankings. Make sure that the page’s keywords are contained in this tag. Moreover, each page’s Title tag should be different from the Title tags on the other pages of the site. The Description tag

Some search engines, such as Google, don’t display descriptions, but in spite of this, it should be included in each page. Write an appealing description for the page and incorporate the page’s search keywords into it at least once, preferably twice.

The Keywords tag

The words in the keywords tag are indexed. Hence, it is important to put plenty of relevant keywords in this tag.

The Header tag

In the above tag, “n” is a number from 1 to 6; the biggest heading size being 1. Header tags are given more weight that ordinary text and, the bigger the H size, the more weight it receives. So include the target search key words in H tags at least once on the page, or better still, two or three times. Also, place the first H tag as near to the top of the page as possible.

Bold text

Bold text is given more weight than ordinary text but not as much as H tags. As far as is reasonable, enclose the search keywords in bold tags when it appears on the page.

Text

Reword small parts, and even add sentences, to make sure that the search term is well represented in the text. In all probability, each word in the search keywords will be found on the page. In fact, if they are not there on their own, add a few of them in the content the page. In general, around 200 words of textual content is optimum for a page.

Alt text

Include the search term in the Alt text of all images on the page.

Work on ensuring website popularity

Search engines accord emphasis to the popularity of the website on the Internet. It keeps track of all the other websites which link to the pages of your website and adds the ranking to the keywords and links present on related websites.
